From multiple directions. I concur with your assessment of the situation.

(The Hamas announcement appeared to take the mediators, and Israel, by surprise, after the latest round of cease-fire negotiations had appeared to break down completely following a Hamas attack near an Israeli border crossing that killed four soldiers Sunday)

Israeli forces took control of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt on Tuesday, making their first ground incursion into the densely packed southern Gaza city where they have vowed to root out the last remnants of Hamas, an operation that angered neighboring Egypt.
An official from the Israel Defense Forces said infantry troops and an armored battalion gained “operational control” of the Palestinian side of the crossing. The official, who declined to be named in line with army protocol, said 20 militants were killed and three tunnel shafts uncovered in what he described as a “specific targeted operation” that was continuing on Tuesday morning.

The operation imperiled already fragile Israeli relations with Egypt, which has repeatedly warned Israel that military action on the border could violate a four-decade-old peace treaty between the two countries.

“Egypt vehemently denounces the Israeli military operation in Palestine Rafah, which has resulted in Israel controlling the Palestinian side of the border,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It described the incursion as a “dangerous escalation” that was threatening cease-fire efforts, adding that the operation endangered the lives of the million Palestinians who depend on the crossing for humanitarian aid and a “safe way out for the injured and patients to get treatment.”

The operation came less than 24 hours after Israel dropped leaflets over the city — now harboring more than a million Palestinians, around half of Gaza’s entire population — ordering them to leave large parts of it. The United States has urged Israel not to carry out an offensive in Rafah without a “credible” plan to evacuate civilians.

But Israel appears intent on upping the pressure on Hamas, whose military capabilities it aims to destroy, while also giving itself additional leverage as it sends mediators to Cairo to reach a deal on freeing its remaining hostages held by Hamas.

Just hours before Israel launched its overnight attack, Hamas said it would agree to a Qatari-Egyptian cease-fire proposal, reviving hopes of an extended pause. It makes you wonder what Hamas claims to have agreed with that the Egyptian/Qatarian mediators offered it???
Oh, apparently, in the first of three phases, militants would release 33 women, children and elderly hostages, with three released every three days in exchange for dozens of Palestinian prisoners (or 700, depending on the source), the official said.

On the 34th day, Hamas would give Israel a list of all remaining hostages???

At the same time, Palestinians would be allowed to return to their homes, Israeli troops would withdraw from the most populated areas inside Gaza and there would be a surge in humanitarian aid.

All military and reconnaissance aviation would cease for eight hours a day, and 10 hours on hostage-release days???

The second and third phases are less specifically spelled out in the written agreement, the senior Arab official said, and are the apparent crux of disagreement between Hamas and Israel. In the second stage, all additional hostages and agreed-on prisoners are to be released once arrangements are made for the return of a “sustainable calm” to Gaza.

But the two sides have differing interpretations of that phrase — first proposed by mediators in late February in an effort to bridge what has long been a seemingly irreconcilable gap between Hamas’s demand that Israel agree to a permanent cease-fire in Gaza and Israel’s insistence that any cease-fire be temporary, allowing it to eliminate what it says are the militant group’s last intact battalions inside Rafah.

During the third stage, according to the proposed deal, the two sides are to exchange bodies of the dead and begin a five-year reconstruction plan for Gaza.

Hamas would agree not to construct any military facilities or import materials used for military purposes. I thought that was UNRWA’s role anyway?

The deal does not address Israel’s demands that Hamas’s military capabilities be destroyed, its leaders eliminated and that the group play no part in governing postwar Gaza.
What were they going to do with the leaflets? No point letting them go to waste.

Hamas's armed wing claimed responsibility on Sunday for an attack on the Kerem Shalom crossing into Gaza that Israel said killed three of its soldiers.

Hamas' armed wing said it fired rockets at an Israeli army base by the crossing, but did not confirm where it fired them from. Hamas media quoted a source close to the group as saying the commercial crossing was not the target.

Shortly after the Hamas attack, an Israeli airstrike hit a house in Rafah killing three people and wounding several others, Palestinian medics said.

The Israeli military confirmed the counter-strike, saying it struck the launcher from which the Hamas projectiles were fired, as well as a nearby "military structure".

Hamas denies it uses civilians as human shields. Much propaganda on both sides. Sunday's attack on the crossing came as hopes dimmed for ceasefire talks under way in Cairo.
Israel's armed forces have begun evacuating Palestinian civilians from Rafah ahead of a threatened assault on the southern Gazan city, an Israeli broadcaster said on Monday.

There was no immediate confirmation from the military of the report on Army Radio.

The last tweet above, with Hamas seizing the shipment, made me think of this video. I stumbled across a while back from a couple years ago before this whole most recent war began….on that date between Oct 6th & 8th…
This video is from two years ago.

You want me to hunt for Twin_Moose’s X content post but from a different source? Specifically about this closed Rafah crossing or from other crossings also? Specifically from the last 24 hours (?) or the last week (?) or the last month (?) or since this latest war started?

The Rafah crossing is closed so the X thing isn’t about it, but the newest newly opened crossing is at Erez & probably what Twin_Moose’s X thing is referring to. Shipment attacked by Israeli “settlers” but gets through to be “diverted” by Palestinian “militants”?? Fun and profit for both sides in the conflict?

Which 4 remaining Hamas guys?

The Erez crossing just opened (reopened I guess) on May 1st so seven days ago, but five days ago it had just reopened a day or two before that.
The Rafah crossing is closed. Can’t see that opening anytime soon if Israel is persuading Gaza’ns to move away from that area to step on Hamas there without having Palestinian civilians as a Hamas hard hat.

It's getting really hard to believe Hamas is stealing aid from anywhere. There is no way in hell there isnt heavy security escorting aid. Back in mid March there was talk of PMCs for aid convoy security. To think there isnt by now that is insisted on by allies is nuts. Bibi shit the bed.

The remains of Hamas couldnt steal a bicycle.

Queen's Park keffiyeh ban loosened, but not overturned
Politicians, staff and visitors will be allowed to enter the building while wearing a keffiyeh

MPP Sarah Jama speaks to press after being asked by the Speaker of the House Ted Arnott to leave the Ontario legislature during question period, in Toronto on Monday, May 6, 2024.
The Speaker of Ontario’s legislature says politicians, staff and visitors will be allowed to enter the building while wearing a keffiyeh, but he is upholding his ban on the scarf inside the legislative chamber.

Sarah Jama, who sits as an independent after being booted from the NDP caucus last year, put on a keffiyeh as question period started today, in defiance of the ban, and was asked to leave.

Members of the NDP caucus, Joel Harden and Kristyn Wong-Tam, also put on scarves and left in solidarity with Jama.

A keffiyeh is a checkered scarf typically worn in Arab cultures that has come to symbolize solidarity with Palestinians, and Speaker Ted Arnott says he concluded that it is being worn to make an overt political statement, which is against the rules of the legislature.

Arnott says since his initial ruling the issue has become politicized and fostered division, so before the start of question period today he says the ban will not apply to people entering the legislative precinct, only within the chamber.

Arnott noted that if a member asks for and receives unanimous consent to wear a keffiyeh in the legislature from all members of provincial parliament, it will be allowed.

Probably about the same as they would feel for other props like “Fuck Trudeau” Buttons, or “I ❤️ Oil” T-Shirts, etc…

They would make you remove it, unless you’re from a demographic…how to word this politically correctly?… unless you’re from a demographic that will potentially vote liberal for a chunk of the country where you will potentially vote liberal?

Does that make any sense? I guess the trick is to become part of the demographic in the right geographical region of the country that the NDP/Liberals or Liberal/NDP think it might be able to squeeze a seat or two out of, and then convinced them that you need to carry your traditional AK-47 because of its cultural and heritage significance…to your people…in your voting block.

They’d seize that at a Rider game ‘cuz they’d assume it’s hiding booze, etc…& I doubt you’d get into parliament or the House of Commons ‘cuz it might be a political prop regarding the grocery stores, etc…& current political what have you…& props aren’t allowed, unless they’re keffiyeh’s, sort of, I guess…

But. . . but. . . it's totally vegan! Surely no good Lib (is there such a thing?) could possibly object.

Kevin Vickers might, though. Nazi.

You might have a convincing argument there!! But…Speakers have consistently ruled that visual displays or demonstrations of any kind used by Members to illustrate their remarks or emphasize their positions are out of order. Similarly, props of any kind have always been found to be unacceptable in the Chamber. See, for example, Debates, March 30, 2000,p. 5443; November 4, 2009,pp. 6609–10; May 12, 2014,p. 5188; June 17, 2014,p. 6998.
But…Vegans, if a large enough voting block (they’re definitely vocal enough) but still a minority, but possibly worth a couple seats in the “correct” geographical area to the “correct” political party…well…just maybe.

Maybe if your Canadian Carmen Mirandas where made out’a recycled keffiyeh’s for environmental reasons…?

Israeli Prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he will not accept Hamas's demands for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza. Netanyahu released a video message rejecting Hamas's request for Israel to withdraw all troops from the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of some of the hostages.
Hamas insists that any hostage-release deal must include a permanent end to the war and a withdrawal of Israeli troops from the enclave, etc…
The word is “ceasefire”, an end to the Israeli assault that has pummeled the Gaza Strip for seven months – killing at least 34,683 and injuring at least 78,018 (according to the Hamas controlled Gaza Health Ministry) more in a drawn-out Israeli retaliation for a Hamas-led attack on its territory on that date last year between October 6th & 8th.

(Can’t say how many Hostages {some news sites are now calling them prisoners} are even still alive, but can say 34,683 dead Palestinians & another 78,018 where wounded, etc…)

Maybe Hamas will tell israel to surrender all positions in Gaza to them again for the 6th time or no deal in the next round of negotiations, and that’ll be the middle ground to a cease-fire, temporary or permanent?
A senior U.S. administration official says that a cease-fire deal could be close in the Israel-Hamas war but both sides still have conflicting proposals.
Why would Israel ever do a cease fire when Hamas always breaks them like they did on Oct 7th?
