Varadkar resigns as Irish PM

Leo Varadkar has announced his resignation as Toiseach (PM) of the Republic of Ireland and as leader of the Fine Gael (Irish for "Family of the Irish") party.

Varadkar took to office in June 2017 until June 2020 and again from December 2022, the country's 14th Toiseach since it seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922.

Aged just 37, Simon Harris has become the youngest ever Toiseach (Prime Minister) of the Republic of Ireland.

In his inauguration speech the new leader of the Fine Gael party condemned the use of the Irish tricolour on the coffin of an IRA member who murdered a garda (Irish police officer) and stated his desire for a strong relationship with the much larger next door neighbour and bordering nation the UK...
