British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has revealed that Royal Navy Sheffield-class destroyer HMS Diamond shot down Houthi drones over the Red Sea.

The Houthis attacked the Royal Navy destroyer with attack drones but HMS Diamond, one of the world's most powerful destroyers equipped with the latest in weaponry and technology, made light work of them. She is able to destroy incoming missiles the size of golf balls travelling at the speed of sound so the Houthi attack drones were swatted away like a rhino swatting away flies.

Needless to say the British warship destroyed the missiles and went on her way completely unscathed. You need a lot more than that to sink a Royal Navy destroyer.

The British were working alongside the Americans in the mission.

HMS Diamond shooting down Houthi attack drones

British and American warships shoot down Houthi drones attacking container ships and British and American warships in order to keep open a vital world trade artery.

On 3rd January the Americans and British warned the Yemen-based Houthis that there would be consequences if they continued to attack merchant shipping in the Red Sea.

Glad to see you still have a navy .

The U.S. and British militaries were bombing more than a dozen sites used by the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen on Thursday, in a massive retaliatory strike using warship-launched Tomahawk missiles and fighter jets, several U.S. officials told The Associated Press. The military targets included logistical hubs, air defense systems and weapons storage locations, they said.

The strikes marked the first U.S. military response against the Houthis for what has been a persistent campaign of drone and missile attacks on commercial ships since the start of the war in Israel. And the coordinated military assault comes just a week after the White House and a host of partner nations issued a final warning to the Houthis to cease the attacks or face potential military action. The officials confirmed the strikes on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.

The rebels, who have carried out 27 attacks involving dozens of drones and missiles just since Nov. 19, said Thursday that any attack by American forces on its sites in Yemen will spark a fierce military response.

US President Joe Burden and UK PM Rishi Sunak confirmed the strikes, saying they were a response to repeated Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

  • US warship-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles and US jets attacked more than 12 sites, including in the capital, Sanaa, and Hudaydah, the Houthi Red Sea port stronghold, US officials say
  • Four RAF Typhoon jets bombed two Houthi targets, flying from Akrotiri base in Cyprus
  • President Biden warned of possible further measures to ensure the free flow of commerce
  • Support was provided by Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, the leaders said

The U.S. military early Saturday struck another another Houthi-controlled site in Yemen that it had determined was putting commercial vessels in the Red Sea at risk, two U.S. officials said, a day after the U.S. and Britain launched multiple airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels.

Asked if he believes the Houthis are a terrorist group, Biden responded, “Who?”

The White House said in November that it was considering redesignating the Houthis as a terrorist organization after they began their targeting of civilian vessels. The administration formally delisted the Houthis as a “foreign terrorist organization” and “specially designated global terrorists” in 2021, undoing a move by then President Donald Trump.

Since November, the rebels have repeatedly targeted ships in the Red Sea, saying they were avenging Israel's offensive in Gaza against Hamas. But they have frequently targeted vessels with tenuous or no clear links to Israel, imperiling shipping in a key route for global trade and energy shipments.

Iran condemned Friday's attack in a statement from Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani. “Arbitrary attacks will have no result other than fueling insecurity and instability in the region," he said. In a separate development, Iran released footage of its seizure of an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman.

Nice to be working with y'all again!

Well the partnership has worked out quite well in recent decades. We're quite good at vanquishing the bad guys, from the Nazis to the Houthis. Sworn enemies 200 years ago to great friends today.
