Wow…just wow…
This all seemed so familiar but I assumed it was a Canadian NDP/Liberal overreach (reach around?) in trying to emulate China (or North Korea, or Russia) in media control, 1984-like, but damn, here we are with our neighbours to the south facing a similar noose on information. Frankly I’m both surprised and unsurprised at the same time.

I’ve posted links as opposed to presenting my own connecting of the dots mentally so that you can draw your own conclusions.

So what happens to the ad dollars and retail sales platforms these sites generate from the big parcel retail extravaganza that the Internet has become?

How big a hit will shit like Amazon take? They are purveyors of "misinformation", "rebellious" apparel and the accoutrements that they embody.

So who polices the police? Who ensures the the inmates aren’t running the asylum?
What keeps the gatekeepers from manipulating the media and preventing dissenting opinions or the actual truth from seeing the light of day? If my aunt had balls would she be my uncle?

I have no idea with respect to the answers to the above questions but with respect to the Internet currently and access to information I think the government should step back and fuck off as opposed to a total overreach and let the existing laws govern real illegal activities like fraud and kiddie porn and terrorism, etc…

If I were the person working at Amazon buying ads on conspiracy sites etc, I'd hire people to fuel the conspiracy fire exposing my ads to more viewers.

If I was an NDP/Liberal Cabinet Minister I’d be pushing the “Online Harms Bill” with both arms as fast as I could to punch through Bill C-11 so that blatant lies to hide government scandals and ethics violations to be openly lied about, and the truth could be banned as harmful misinformation, but I’m not an NDP/Liberal Cabinet minister.
Jagmeet was so opposed to this that he joined up with a non-coalition coalition.

Heavy Fines on MPs for every time they lie would fix that. Turn the digital surveillance tables.

Why not have the public monitor the Govt 24/7?

….& that’s what the Internet is currently performing as far as monitoring the government to the extent that it’s able to with many of us private citizens on here posting and debating and exposing the lies and horseshit as we stumble across them, and informing others so that they can make educated choices in our next federal election….. and that’s what’s in danger with the “Online Harms Bill” being C-11.

$500 fines maybe for ethics violations for somebody with a salary of $200,000+ a year in taxpayer dollars is beyond laughable and the fines should be a percentage of their annual government salary for each lie or ethics violation an MP is caught in. Let’s call it 15% per occurrence….& broad media and Internet coverage of the lie.
