European Champions England - winners of Euro 2022 - have reached the World Cup Final after beating Australia 3-1 in the Semi-Final in Australia.

It is England Women's first World Cup Final where they will play Spain on Sunday. It is also Spain's first Women's World Cup Final.

Will England add the world title to their European title?

King Congratulates England

King Charles III has sent his congratulations to England's women after they thrashed co-hosts Australia to reach the World Cup Final.

Today, the Welsh Guards belted out the England football anthem "Sweet Caroline" during the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.

England are the favourites to win the World Cup on Sunday.

The King said:

"My wife and I join all our family in sending the mighty Lionesses our warmest congratulations on reaching the final of the World Cup, and in sharing our very best wishes for Sunday’s match. While your victory may have cost the magnificent Matildas their chance for the greatest prize in the game, both teams have been an inspiration on and off the pitch – and, for that, both nations are united in pride, admiration and respect."

Why am I thinking of vampires?

The King is a direct descendant, via his father, of the deranged Romanian leader Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration that British author Bram Stoker acquired for his now famous vampire in his 1897 novel Dracula.

The King adores Romania, and Transylvania in particular, and visited Transylvania earlier this year. Meeting with the Romanian president he outlined the love he has for the country.

The King and Queen own one or two properties in Transylvania.

Vlad the Impaler was a military hero who was key to the defeat of an invading Ottoman army through the first use in Europe of cannon in warfare. Impalement was a well-known and widely practiced method of execution in that time/place.
